Sanlucar de Barrameda Fair, the smoothest Sherry Wine

Just returned from El Rocío the people of Sanlucar prepare to another of its major festivals, the Feria de la Manzanilla, a burst of joy.

Sanlúcar, elegant and sensual city, gives visitors a very traditional fair fun in the dance and send the horses ... even over chamomile and shrimp, which is already difficult.

Come to enjoy between Wednesday 2 and Sunday June 6

How to get there

You can travel to Sanlúcar de Barrameda in car and bus from Seville or Cadiz, Jerez, or the nearby Jerez de la Frontera (20 minutes) by train or plane, and there choose between a rental car or bus line Jerez Sanlúcar.

Car
If you are coming from Seville (from Huelva, Cordoba and Seville Madrid must be crossed) there are two options:
The most direct is to take the N-IV to Cadiz and depart after Los Palacios (is perfectly suited) to cross Lebrija, Trebujena and reaching Sanlúcar. It is a very nice, but on peak days can be torture because they employ thousands of Seville that summer in Chipiona and Sanlucar or cause delays.
If we like motorways, take the AP4 to Puerto Real, exit at junction towards Jerez and Jerez from the ring to exit at Sanlúcar.

Those who come from Cadiz and Malaga, must take into El Puerto de Santa Maria Rota road, which functions as bypass port, and take the detour to Sanlúcar. It is a country road in good condition in just 20 minutes across landscapes of vineyards and cereal leaves us in Sanlúcar.
Coach
The Yellows have frequent services from Seville, Cadiz and Jerez. Some are direct and many others make stops (Sevilla-Lebrija-Trebujena-Sanlúcar, and Cadiz, El Puerto, Sanlúcar)
Train
The nearest railway stations are those of Jerez and El Puerto de Santa Maria. In both cases must be sought together with local bus route to Sanlúcar.
Plane
Jerez airport is small, with all the amenities that this represents: quick procedures, ease of movement, "may opt for a rental car at the airport, or for linking with bus routes in the downtown bus station Jerez.

The best plan for the Feria

Some recommendations to better enjoy the fair:

The horse parade is very important, as befits the tradition and love of Sanlúcar the field in general, but to know it is limited to Friday and Saturday, and only from 13h to 18h, being of the lowest in the time (in Seville, for example from 12 to 20h, and generally in the province of Cadiz and lasts until at least 19h). At noon we offer beautiful pictures, but only Friday and Saturday.

In addition to the Fair, Sanlúcar offers the charm and serene beauty of the old town and the freshness of its beaches in front of Doñana: should organize to enjoy both in addition to the Fair. It is sufficient to take advantage of this privileged location, halfway between downtown (Lower Town) and the beach itself, and then everyone decides what time you want to enjoy everything.

There is only bullfighting, but bullfighting is a flashy, on Saturday at 19h (horse parade ended.) From the Fair can walk to the Plaza de Toros without problems: we expect the bulls and figures Torrealta Morante de la Puebla, Manzanares and Cayetano.

Feria is a manor, which does not mean it is noble: we can go in casual clothes are in tune, but always in the markets should, in the comfort, dressing and combing carefully ... to see us. This is a very fair slab, which is sung and danced a lot, not just food and pop music stands (at all).

Of interest

The visitor should not leave without seeing her Sanlúcar Market Square in the Lower Town at the foot of the Palace of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia.

The market de Sanlúcar is a feast for the senses: the smell of freshly picked vegetables from the gardens, the variety of fish and stalls overflowing with the small market and are scattered throughout the surrounding streets in an image reminiscent of times past or exotic countries .

The products are of high quality, given the rich environment for both agricultural and fisheries, and prices are adjusted.
In the Fish Market in Bonanza is also possible to buy fish, but it is an establishment for wholesale

Wineries can sometimes visited and Sanlúcar is a sin leaving without doing so, since not only is industrial with centuries of history, but there are beautiful gardens ... and above all the silence and the cool cellars with their ancestral breeding system in solera, exclusive of Jerez:
swaths with 3 or 4 levels, which facilitates continuous decanting younger wines to older boots, which are below, so that the result is always a homogeneous broth can not be distinguished vintages.

Cross the river to visit the Coto de Doñana is a highly recommended tour
Trace the Guadalquivir to Seville is a full day trip: the journey, of great beauty, runs slowly over 5 hours, so that is probably a good idea to spend the rest of the day to visit Sevilla and return a day Next, take a bus or line at dusk.

History & Legends

Sanlúcar has been a strategic location for more than 2,000 years, being the gateway to the Guadalquivir (and before it took the form of a river, the entrance to the Romans Lacus Licustino when Doñana was flooded). So it is a monumental city, whose past survives in particular churches, houses and palaces of the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries when America was added traffic even more important.
During the Reconquest was not a bastion particularly disputed, but is one of the major cities of late medieval and Renaissance Andalusian because it was the venue where he settled the house of Medina Sidonia, one of the bastions of power of the Kings of Castile . They built a palace at the height of his power, which was growing and renewing itself over the centuries in a harmonious blend of styles. From his extensive dominion controlled Sanlúcar (which arrived in Algeciras), whose economic foundations were the livestock, wine, fishing traps, and of course the war and piracy in the north of Africa. These two activities have left no trace in Sanlúcar, but were essential to the successful conquest of America by the warlike vassals of the kings of Castile.
Sanlúcar and America
Sanlúcar played an important role in trade with America, as gateway to the Guadalquivir, which were sailing the galleons in the sixteenth and seventeenth century landed at the port of Seville gold, silver and other riches American and embarking on all sorts Sevilla manufacturing to the emerging colonial society.
The Bacon of Heaven and the wineries of Sanlúcar
There are many places in Spain that claim uo creating cakes flagship of the national cuisine, bacon from heaven. Sanlúcar also provides a justification: to breed Manzanilla, in historical times the egg white only allowed to clarify musts. As this is the main activity "industrial" Sanlúcar, it took huge quantities of chicken eggs and about all the tips ... that ably were reused by the local convents.

Tapas

Balbino Plaza del Cabildo. The tapas bar most valued by themselves Sanlúcar, with a good kitchen and a good house manzanilla produced by a family winery in Sanlúcar.

The Arquillo One of the best pubs for eating fish, always fresh, and accompanied with a manzanilla excellent minority, perhaps we can find only in Sanlúcar: Ebb, the historic winery Gaspar Florido. Homemade stews. Good price..

Barbiana, Plaza del Cabildo. A classic with all the flavor of tradition, specializing in dressing (dressing potatoes are a scandal) and seasonal seafood.
Casa Juanito Iberian products for both lunch and breakfast (the traveler visiting Andalusia must prove at least a toast with olive oil and prosciutto, and this is a great site.) Next to the Market Square.

Coffee & Drinks

La Ibense
Pza del Cabildo
The Ibense is more than a café, is an institution in Sanlúcar both the cafeteria as the industry that these descendants of Valencia set up after the war and that make this one of the leading producers of ice creams.
Too bad they are no longer able to be consumed fresh from the nearby Patisserie Pozo on the terrace.

A landmark for the sweet pastry own Sanlúcar, Tocino de Cielo (Bacon of Heaven).
The bakery has always been known sanluqueña, proof of this: the biscuits of Charity (cake, egg yolk and merengue), croissants, artisan and piononos ... all the flavors of pure ingredients.

Parking

1 .- Zona del Castillo, which requires walking downhill but always
2 .- Paseo Marítimo
3 .- Barrio Alto
4 .- Lower Town along the Paseo de la Feria

Travelling with children

The Town Hall Square is ideal for children: there is little traffic, pedestrian streets, and many families enjoying the guardians of the tapas bars and cafes.
Sanlúcar beaches are ideal for children by the near absence of waves, being defended by an estuary opposite bank (Doñana) and a natural breakwater and submerged (the bar, formed by the edimentos that each winter brings Guadalquivir)

It is strongly recommended to enjoy the beach during the morning, at dusk, take place alongside any of the "places" where kids place bets on which horse will go first to draw the line in the sand with his feet to his post ... and make your bets!
Cruzar el río para visitar el Coto de Doñana es una más que recomendable excursión con niños, así como una visita a la Lonja de Bonanza, donde podrán ver marrajos (tiburones) y otros grandes peces así como la flota pesquera.
